Join IVV

Objectives
The IVV exists to create an increased awareness of road safety through driver training and education; to raise the standard of driver training; and to encourage and promote the interests and welfare of those involved in professional driver training.

History and Role
The IVV was founded in 1957 and remains the only worldwide organisation representing the interests of driving school proprietors and their associations. Since its launch, new educational methods and curricula have been implemented in numerous countries with great success, and conferences have been held in many parts of the world. In the mid-eighties, the IVV was extensively reorganised. Prior to this, only one representative organisation per country was eligible for membership, which had political implications. Achieving United Nations Consultative Status in 1985, allowed many important new contacts to be made worldwide. IVV-Safex world conferences are now held regularly and continue to be well supported.

Organisation
The headquarters of the IVV is based at the office of the President. The President acts as coordinator for all agendas and, through his staff, produces information for members. There are two senior vice presidents, who form part of the management committee, and two additional vice presidents representing the Americas and the Asia Pacific Region. There is an IVV European Assembly which is charged with coordinating European Community policy. The IVV is independent and non-political. The official language of the organisation is English. All expenses for travelling and translation have to be funded by each member. The membership fee is set at a nominal level. Conferences and other events are linked with national organisations who act as sponsors.

The Future
More than a million people are dying on the world’s roads every year. Yet over 90% of so-called road traffic ‘accidents’ are caused by driver error. One solution to these horrifying statistics is to improve driving skills, knowledge and attitudes through better training. The IVV has a simple policy towards international road safety: total support must be given to those who are responsible for that training. Whilst we are directly working towards the harmonisation of driver licensing, we must extend this to testing and training in Europe. The IVV is committed to ensuring that these standards are monitored and improved within Europe and, ultimately, extended worldwide.
